Caller ID
Caller ID is the calling-party information presented to a call recipient or receiving network, usually a telephone number and sometimes a display name.
How caller ID works
When a call is placed, the originating telephony system sends information about the calling party into the carrier network. The receiving carrier decides what to deliver and the recipient's device decides what to display. A name may come from a separate CNAM lookup or another carrier data source rather than traveling with the number in the same way.
Caller ID is not proof of identity. Numbers can be misconfigured or spoofed, and legitimate calls can be mislabeled. STIR/SHAKEN helps receiving networks evaluate whether the originating provider has attested to the caller's right to use a number, but it does not guarantee that the recipient knows or trusts the caller. Carrier analytics, calling patterns, and recipient feedback can still affect display and blocking.
Inbound systems should therefore treat caller ID as useful routing context, not unquestionable authentication. It can help find a contact record or choose a call flow, but sensitive account access should use an appropriate verification step.
Why it matters for AI phone calls
For outbound AI calls, the displayed number shapes whether recipients recognize the business and can return the call. The organization should use a number it is authorized to present and route callbacks to a useful destination. The spoken introduction should also identify the caller clearly; a familiar number does not replace disclosure or consent requirements.
For inbound calls, an AI agent can use the calling number to personalize routing or retrieve likely context, while still confirming important details with the caller. If the number is missing, withheld, or does not match a record, the call flow needs a fallback rather than assuming failure.
Teams should test caller ID across representative receiving networks and devices. Name display, number formatting, verification indicators, and spam labels can vary even when the originating configuration is unchanged. Correct configuration is necessary, but downstream presentation is not controlled by the AI application alone.
