Call recording

Call recording is the capture and storage of audio from a phone conversation so the interaction can be played back after it occurs.

How call recording works

The calling system copies audio from one or more call legs into an audio file or media stream. A mixed recording combines participants into one track. A separated or multichannel recording preserves each side independently, which can make speaker-specific review and transcription easier. The recording may cover the whole call or only the portion allowed by the configured workflow.

A recording preserves more than the words. It can retain pauses, interruptions, pronunciation, background noise, and vocal delivery that a transcript may simplify or omit. That makes it useful for investigating transcription errors, reviewing agent behavior, checking how a transfer unfolded, and diagnosing audio problems. It also makes the file sensitive: voices and spoken details may reveal personal or regulated information.

Call recording is not the same as call monitoring. Recording creates an artifact for later use, while monitoring is the live or near-live observation of an active call. It is also distinct from transcription, which converts speech into searchable text. An organization may use all three, but each has its own purpose, access pattern, and risk.

Why it matters for AI phone calls

AI phone agents operate without a person hearing every interaction. Recordings let authorized reviewers return to the original audio when a summary, score, or transcript looks questionable. They can also reveal issues that text alone hides, such as long silence, clipped speech, poor turn-taking, or a caller struggling to hear.

Recording should be governed as a deliberate data practice, not merely enabled because it is available. Requirements for notice and consent vary by location and context. Teams need to determine when recording is permitted, how callers are informed, who may listen, how long files are retained, and how deletion requests are handled. Connected workflows and exports must follow the same controls.
